Quality Score within Bing PPC Ads

Briefly, what is a quality score?

quality-score-heading-600The Bing PPC Quality Score is a number from 1 to 10 that shows how competitive your ads are. Bing measures web page visitors’ search queries and other input to find the relavance of your

quality-score-of-ppc-advertising-600Bing appears to be a Google wannabe.  Right now their PPC ads are priced much lower than Google’s. And, if you have a high quality score, your ads will be even cheaper.

Placement of Bing ads

bing-pay-per-clickBing PPC ads could be at the top, side or bottom of a search engine results page (SERP). They could even be on page 2.

Obviously you will get more clicks if your ad is at the top of page 1. So, how do you get it there?  You get there by having a high Bing Ads quality score.

3 factors determine quality score

There are 3 factors that determine the quality score:

  • Relevance
  • User experience
  • Performance.

Relevance

  • Keyword relevance
    • Keyword should match ad copy
    • The more often pertinent keywords are in your ad copy, the better.
    • Use hashtagify.  Using hashtagify I was able to find out that PPC was one of the most common keywords used when people also used quality score.
    • bing-ppc-campaign-related-searcheAnother good way to get pertinent keywords is to search for an important keyword on Bing.  Then look at the bottom of the Bing search engine results page (SERP) for the Bing related searches.
    • Stick to exact and phrase matches
    • Bing determines the keyword relevance score by comparing the click-through rate (CTR) with the average CTR of the same keyword throughout the Bing network.
  • Landing page relevance
    • How closely related are a visitor’s search terms to your landing page and ad copy?
    • Lowering the bounce rate will increase the quality score.
      • Do this by linking to other pages on your website.
      • Create pertinent meta title, keyword & description tags.
    • Have keyword-rich text content.

User experience

  • Give visitors content of the type they would expect
    • If they search for “Las Vegas vacation”, they do not want much information about Atlantic City.
    • Don’t auto-play videos
    • Don’t use popups

Performance

An ad’s performance is determined by its click-through rate (CTR). You can improve you CTR by

  • Checking your Bing ads regularly and adjusting your
    • Bid amounts
    • Keywords
    • Ad copy and
    • Landing pages.

Sample ad

how-to-create-email-listsLet’s look at a sample ad. Then, let’s decide why it indeed has a high quality score.

Why that’s a good ad

  • The headline has an “emotional term”. For many people, “how to” is a emotional term. It gets them emotionally involved with the ad.  Here’s a list of 8 emotional terms:

    • Free

    • How to (fill in the blank)

    • Now

    • Today

    • Quick(ly)

    • Easy

    • Simple

    • Best

  • The body also has an emotional term (best).
  • Click on the ad.  You will see that it links to a powerful web page.
  • Both the headline and the body contain a popular keyword (email list).
  • power-vertical-word-600It links to a page about the keyword term (email lists).
  • The body has a power word (you need to know).
  • The keyword (email list) matches the ad copy.

Ad title analyzer

The Headline Analyzer is a free website that will analyze your headlines for quality. This is based on such things as uncommon words, emotional words and power words.

Note that the Headline Analyzer website is built for headlines in general.  The maximum size of a Bing PPC ad healine is 25 characters.  So, it’s impossible to get a very high score.

You are allowed to have 71 characters in the body.  So, you can analyze your body or at least individual sentences within the body.  Find out if you have enough emotion and power words.

Bing PPC Campaign Adjustment

PPC ad placement

bing-ppc-ads-on-p-1In the Bing SERP (search engine results page) to the left, someone was searching for Bing PPC Campaign. They found PPC ads on the top and bottom of both page 1 and page 2. (Sometimes they are even on the side.)

It is intuitively obvious that the ads at the top of page 1 will get the most clicks. This article is about how to get your Bing PPC ads to the top of page 1.

PPC and other keywords

bing ppc-quality-score-ad

Learn more about PPC quality scores. As you can read in the PPC quality scores post, having the right keywords in your landing page and your PPC ad (if possible) is one factor that will help move your ad towards the top of page 1. For this ad, PPC Quality Score is used both in the ad and in the landing page.

bing-ppc-campaign-related-searcheIf you look at the bottom of a Bing PPC Campaign SERP, you will find related keywords. You may be increasing the chances of getting your ad at the top of page 1 by using related keywords in your ad campaign.

Remember that Bing will show your ads whenever one of the keywords are shown. Don’t be too general. Otherwise, people could end up clicking on your ad when they want a competitor’s product.

E.g., If your keyword was PPC ads, you could get lots of people who want information about Google PPC ads.

Adjusting Bing PPC ads

bing ppc-ad-campaign-table

Let’s say that the above table represents the state of your Bing PPC ads. Let’s talk about some events that could change the look of this table and the status of your ad campaign.

  • Stop ads from running — Click on a green circle and select paused.
  • Start running one of the paused ads — Click on the orange dot and select enabled. That will change the Delivery column to Eligible. (In order to make the orange dot clickable, you may have to click the Campaigns tab at the top of the page.)
  • Changing the daily maximum ad fee — To change the budget amount, click on the Settings tab and change the amount to whatever you wish.
  • Geographical location of ad — Click on Settings and go to the locations column. Click on a country in an appropriate cell. To pick different locations, click Edit location targets and follow the instructions.
  • Adding keywords — As discussed above, you may want to pick the related keywords from the Related keywords at the bottom of a SERP.  Click the Keywords tab and then the Add keywords button. Select  ad group > Save. Then simply follow instructions. Make sure your keywords are targeted enough.  If you want to send visitors to a blog post about Bing PPC ads, you should NOT use PPC ads for a keyword.  It is too general and people looking for Google PPC words may click on your ad.
  • Removing keywords — Click on Keywords tab at the top of the page.  Click on the Campaign tab so that all of identical campaigns are grouped together. Hover beside the green buttons on the left. Click  paused if you do not want it.

Pay Per Click Ads that You Create

Social Media & Your Own PPC

pay per click

One way to make money with your social media is to link it to a web page that has advertising.  We’ll discuss linking to a page with your OWN pay per click (PPC) advertising.

Your OWN pay per click advertising

If you use Income Activator, it is possible to have your own PPC advertising.  Rather than having to pay 68% of the advertising revenue to Google, you keep all of it.  You can set up the software so that it notifies your database every time someone clicks on a link from your page to the advertiser’s website.

You select a date range for billing the customer.  Income Activator will generate an invoice for all of the pay per clicks in that time frame.

Imagine your favorite spa paying you, say, $20 each time you recommend them.  Think about that as you read the next paragraph and then watch the video.

In the YouTube video below, you are writing a blog about all sorts of special things within your city.  You approach the owners of your favorite businesses and offer to give them amazing reviews in your blog.  Those reviews could link to the websites belonging to those favorite businesses.  Each time someone clicked on a link, you would get paid for it.

How To Do Keyword ResearchIncome Activator’s website builder shows you how to increase your visitor traffic by adding keywords that are being searched for the most to your content.

Your Own PPC Ads — With Google pay per click (PPC) ads, Google keeps 32% of the revenue and you get 68%.  With Income Activator pay per click ads, you keep 100% of the revenue.  When visitors click on your PPC ads, they can end up on another company’s website.  Income Activator automatically charges that company for the click.  The invoice is automatically created.  You can be earning money 24 hours a day while you are on vacation.  You can have an unlimited number of advertisers and track links related to each advertiser.

Editor’s note

I switched from Income Activator to WordPress because the latter CMS served my purposes much better.  The advantage of using Income Activator for building your website is this: It has 10 built-in revenue models. If you are convinced that one of these revenue models will be profitable for you, go for it.

(Note that I wanted to use my blog for things other than those 10 revenue models.  I ended up changing to WordPress and I am very glad I did. Changing to WordPress also inspired me to develop the free 7 Day YouTube tutorial. This tutorial teaches people how to create entertaining videos & animated GIFs. You will learn how to make animated GIFs like the one on the right.)

Watergate and Social Media

8 different social media

The previous blog post described the Watergate video game and encouraged people to download it.  The purpose of the blog was to get more downloads.

That blog was one social medium.  Today’s post talks about 6 other social media that, when used in conjunction with that blog post, will encourage more downloads.

Watergatestory Pinterest Free game download

To get a free game download to your smartphone or tablet, go to bit.ly/watergategame.  To learn more about the history of Watergate including links to important news stories by Bernstein & Woodward, go to bit.ly/watergatehistory.

Pinterest

The combination of pictures and text above is a Pinterest pin.  In this particular case, it combines text and images in such a way that people who play lots of video games on their mobile devices are likely to download this free video game.

People can hover over the pin and then click the red Pinterest button in order to add the pin to one of their own Pinterest boards.

The way Pinterest is set up, it is reasonable to assume that people will be looking at a particular pin and looking at the page to which it is linked months after it was created.

SlideShare is a series of slides like the one you see below.  Each presentation should have a number of slides that all relate to one single theme.

The theme of the slide show below is this: Watergate is an interesting game.  You should download it into your smartphone or tablet.

Twitter

Watergate hotelFor every single blog post, I create a Twitter post (tweet) linking to it.  It will have a picture that piques their curiosity, a few words of intrigue and a link to the blog.  The link will often use a free URL shortening service such as Bitly.  Then I change the short URL to a descriptive name.

For instance, this website is about 7 different social media.  So, I shortened the URL of this website to bit.ly/link7socialmedia.

Facebook

I have a social media marketing Facebook page.  Learn more about promoting with Facebook.  To see how I used Facebook to promote the Watergate game, go to https://www.facebook.com/SocialMediaToIncreaseSales/ and scroll down until you see a picture very much like the Twitter picture you see above.

Google+

I use Google Plus in a way similar to Twitter and Facebook.  I have an entry linking to every single blog post.

It gives the essence of my blog post in a few words, it has a picture from the post and links to the post.  The URL of my Google+ page is too complex to memorize.  So, I used Bitly to shorten it to bit.ly/googleplusentry.

LinkedIn

Go to the related post to see how I promoted the game download on LinkedIn.

How to get good at using each of these social media

Hover over the blog tab in the horizontal menu above.  You will see that there is a tab for each of the social media mentioned on this page.  There are a number of articles helping you to learn about each medium.

LinkedIn Tips to Maximize Your Experience

What’s LinkedIn?

linkedin tips

LinkedIn is a powerful social medium for business people.  It helps people find new employees, find jobs and find amazing business ideas.  Below are some LinkedIn tips to help you get the most out of this social medium.

Here are 10 tips for getting more from LinkedIn.

  1. Go to your home page and discover who has viewed your profile lately.  Consider writing them, looking at their profile and eventually connecting with them.
  2. Occasionally click on Interests > Companies to see if you can share an update on your company page.
  3. Add a LinkedIn share button to the bottom of your better blog posts.  When visitors click on it, they will be sharing your blog post with their business network on LinkedIn.   There are 3 different buttons from which to choose.  Go to the share button page, copy the snippet of code and paste it into the HTML of your website.
  4. A very important person may be searching for someone just like you.  Make sure your LinkedIn profile has the right keywords.
  5. There is a LinkedIn group for almost every interest imaginable.  Join a few that relate to your business.  Start by clicking on Find a group and then entering the topic in which you are interested.
  6. Post a discussion in a group(s).  You will turn people off if you are blatantly trying to sell something.  If you want to promote something, do it subtly.
  7. Comment on ongoing group discussions.  When it naturally flows, you may add a link to a discussion.  The caution from point #6 above also applies to comments.
  8. Go to the bottom of some of your better web pages.  Add a link to your LinkedIn profile.
  9. Click the home tab regularly to see what your connections are up to.  Use this opportunity to interact with them.
  10. Consider publishing on LinkedIn Pulse.  You do not want to get penalized by Google by having an identical article published both on your blog and on LinkedIn Pulse.  However, LinkedIn has a much better Alexa rank than your blog.  You are much more likely to have your article noticed when it is published in LinkedIn Pulse rather than your blog. To learn more about LinkedIn Pulse, hover over your profile image and click on Get Help.  Then start searching for information about long-form posts.  Eventually you should end up reading an article titled Publishing Long-form Posts on LinkedIn.
