WordPress Photo & Text into Right-hand column

WordPress photo to promote the author

You often want to have a WordPress photo and author’s name in the right-hand column of your WordPress blog posts. It will help promote the author to have his name & photo above the fold.

Use text widget

WordPress photo

Find a photo of the author on a web page. Go into the source code and find the IMG element that has the photo. For example, this is the IMG element for the picture here:  <img class=”wp-image-7211 alignright” src=”http://freewebdesign.club/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Peter-Enns-red-shirt-2.png” alt=”WordPress photo” width=”110″ height=”110″ />.

Use Cmd C to copy that IMG element into your clipboard.

WordPress photo

In your WordPress dashboard, click on Appearance > Widgets. Find the Text widget and drag it into the sidebar.

In the sidebar, click on the dropdown arrow in the text widget. Press Cmd V to paste the IMG element into the Content area. Add the author’s name.

Leave the title blank.

Here is the entire text for the Text widget Content on this page: By Peter Enns  <img class=”wp-image-7211 alignright” src=”http://freewebdesign.club/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Peter-Enns-red-shirt-2.png” alt=”WordPress photo” width=”110″ height=”110″ />.

You can add a date if you wish. You can say something such as, “First posted April 9, 2017.”

If you use a WordPress plugin called Post Updated Date, every time you update this post, the updated date will appear in the centre column.

(Updating your posts occasionally is good for SEO and also make old posts more credible.)

Now visitors to this post will notice the author’s name & photo. This is part of the author’s branding process.

SlideShare Links to Web Pages

Eye-catching slides in a SlideShare presentation

Author & speaker, Mark Schaefer, received 7000 views for a blog post.  He turned the blog post into a SlideShare presentation and received 110,000 views. There is lots of potential with SlideShare.

Those types of statistics can happen if you have an eye-catching presentation. Not only that, but people can link from your slides to your web pages.

This blog post assumes that you have made your Keynote slide show. I will show you how to make that into a PDF file. Then you will select portions of certain slides and make them link to the web page of your choice.

PopupAlly Pro Review & WordPress Theme

What’s the point of email marketing?

According to Exact Target, for every $1 spent on email marketing, the average return on investment is $44.25. So, if you do any type of advertising at all, you will want to include email marketing in your mix. If you have the right themes, PopupAlly Pro can help you with that.

Pros and cons of PopupAlly Pro

Let’s talk a bit about PopupAlly Pro. There are pros and cons.

The good news is that, according to tech support, it will work with Divi, Elegant, Blox, Headways, Avada, and Enfold themes.  I don’t even know what they are. Tech support led me to believe that installing anyone of them would be very complicated.

So, if you have any of those themes, you can have both a popup form and an embedded form on a page. In order to not get penalized by Google, you can disable the popup form on mobile devices.

When visitors to your website fill in a form, their contact data will be sent to an email marketing platform such as AWeber.

The bad news is that it does not work with the WordPress theme I use (Twenty Sixteen).  I worked for a few dozen hours with PopupAlly Pro and corresponded with tech support multiple times.  Never once did anyone Tomatoes PopupAlly Prosuggest it would not work with the Twenty Sixteen WordPress them.

If PopupAlly Pro were a movie, I’d give it lots of rotten tomatoes.

In all fairness, they did offer to refund my money (he said with a scowl on his face).

What is PopupAlly Pro?

PopupAlly Pro is a software package with which you can add both popup and embedded forms to a web page (if you have the right WordPress theme). Then you will combine your forms with an email marketing system such as AWeber.

PopupAlly Pro allows you to have popup forms on a desktop that will not show up on a mobile device. Your mobile device visitors will see only embedded forms. Because popup ads cover important material on a mobile device, Google ranks websites lower if they use popups. However, Google will NOT penalize anyone for having popup forms in a desktop.

Until you learn a few little tricks, PopupAlly Pro is not as intuitive as it could be.  Also, my experience with their tech support was sort of third rate.

If you go to bit.ly/7dayyoutube, you will see an example of an embedded form. If you fill it out, you will be sent an email a day for the next 7 days. Each email will have a link to a page that will give you a free lesson on creating entertaining YouTube videos.

Ebiz, How to Have a Successful Online Store

Your own Ebiz

ebiz shopping-with-smartphone-within-store-600Ebiz (electronic business) is the conduct of business processes on the Internet.

Perhaps you have a brick and mortar store and are upset with all of your potential shoppers who are shopping online.  This blog post will help you set up your own online store.  Promote online to people in your own city. You can have the best of both worlds — ebiz and physical store.

Perhaps you want to sell downloadable products throughout the English-speaking world.  This blog post will help with that too.

Lay the foundation

As the cliche says, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”  You will want to set up your store in neat columns & rows with buy now buttons that will add your sales tax and freight and then collect the money for you.  Before you do that, lay your foundation.

Add a table

table-with-buy-now-buttons-300The SFM system mentioned above will automate much of the online store creation for you.  In the event that you want to make your own, go to the blog post telling how to make an HTML table.

Assuming you are using WordPress, you can use CSS to add border, align the data, etc.

Add PayPal buy now buttons

paypal-horizontal-menuTo add PayPal buy now buttons, go to paypal.com.  Click the signup button.  Login. From the horizontal menu click on More > Sitemap > Create PayPal Buttons (in the tools section) > Create New Button.  Follow the instructions.

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a marketing arrangement by which the owner of a good or service pays a commission to a third party (the affiliate). The affiliate has an external website that promotes the good or service. The affiliate gets a commission for every sale generated from its referrals.

An example of this is ClickBank.  Every product on that website is some sort of downloadable software.  An affiliate creates a website that promotes the software.  When someone downloads the software from a link on that website, an affiliate code will be included in the order. ClickBank will give the affiliate code owner a fixed percentage of the sale amount.  (ClickBank will also get a percentage of the sale.)

Ebiz is here to stay

Ecommerce retail sales are increasing at a rate much faster than regular brick & mortar store sales.  If you are interested in retail, ebiz is the way to go.

Technology Replacing Jobs

Disappearing jobs

technology replacing jobs makemoney online sign-600

The Digital Trends website tells us that 5 million American jobs are expected to be replaced by robots by 2020.   Technology replacing jobs is a huge problem.  As a result, many people are looking elsewhere for employment.

Replacement jobs

Beware of Internet scams

With the changing job market, the scammers have entered the scene.  You may get an email claiming to be a woman in Nigeria. Her husband died and she would like you to help her get his fortune out of Nigeria.  In exchange you will get a big percentage of the inheritance.  Press “delete” as soon as you see this one.

Another one tells you that you have won millions of dollars.  In order to receive it, you have to pay a processing fee of several thousands of dollars.  Delete.

Those scam warnings and many more were from the About Tech website.  Read more.

Some are legitimate

Just because there are lots of scams out there, you should not reject them all.  For instance, lots of people make very good affiliate income on ClickBank.  (In this scenario, you promote a product online.  When people buy because of a link from your website, you get a percentage of the sale.)

My favourite online business is an affiliate marketing opportunity with a twist.  You earn money at home by helping people solve a problem they enquire about online.

Instead of simply promoting a product on your website, you offer to email them a free PDF file or video that would help them solve a problem.  So, they fill in a form and you email them the free information.  As the days pass, you will email them more related free information.  It is genuinely useful information.  After you develop a relationship with them, you will offer to sell them something.

If they buy the product, you will develop an online relationship with them even further.  Hopefully you will eventually sell them related products.

I have been studying one company that uses this system.  They are legitimate and I would not hesitate dealing with them.

Using this system, some people made good money even during the recession of 2008 – 2009.

Earn money online with fewer working hours

Technology replacing jobs to robots

Watch the video below to see how robots are removing more jobs that they are creating.  The “earn money online” system is one system that will work even if technology is replacing your job.

Obsolete jobs

Read about technology replacing jobs.  Read about 30 jobs that are becoming obsolete.

Amazon is first choice

According to Bloomberg News

More than half of U.S. online consumers begin their product searches on Amazon.com Inc.’s website or mobile app, a survey found. . . . Fifty-five percent of those surveyed go to Amazon first when searching for products, an increase from 44 percent a year earlier, according to a Labor Day weekend poll of 2,000 people released by the Internet marketing firm BloomReach Inc.  Read more.

One side effect of this: If you are working in retail, your job may be threatened.  Perhaps it would be a good idea to get skills in a future-oriented career that will not become obsolete for a long time.  You can keep working in retail full time while earning money online part time.  You will be prepared for the time when technology replaces your job.

Webalizer Website Statistics

Making sense out of those statistics

webalizer-statistics

Various web hosts including LiquidNet Ltd Hosting use Webalizer to help people get statistics for their websites.  If you are not using that web host, you will have to adjust the information below to suit your situation.

Getting started using Webalizer in 7 steps

Read the brown text to skim through these steps.

  1. Go to the LiquidNet Hosting control panel.  I live in North America.  So, I go to us.cloudlogin.co.
  2. webalizer-summary-of-business-for-past-yearStatistics > Web Statitics.
  3. Go to the line that represents the website for which you wish to have statistics.
  4. Click on the graphic in the Webalizer column.
  5. That will give you a summary of the activity for the past year.
  6. The yellow area in the graph and in the tab represent visits to the website.  That is likely the most important statistic.  A single visit is the number of times a visitor has gone to your website for a 30 minute period of time.  For instance, when someone goes to your website and visits 11 pages during a 12 minute period, that would be one visit.  When someone goes to your website and visits a bunch of pages over a 48 minute period of time, that would be two visits.
  7. Click in the month column to find the statistics for a particular month.

Example

Blogging 101 webalizerIn September I created my WordPress blog post. Then I started an advertising program to get people to that post. I want to know how successful my advertising program is.

Going down to my top 10 pages, I saw that the WordPress blog post had 1714 visits using it as an entry page.  I saw that 558 visitors used that post as an exit page.

That means that over 1100 visitors linked to another page from my blog post page.  Over two thirds of the visitors linking to another page meant that at least two thirds of the people who went to the page engaged with my entry page.

What that meant to me was that it would be worth my while putting some very effective advertising on that page.

Webpage — Information, Aesthetics & Technical

3 characteristics of webpage presentationwebpage with Great Content

When judging how good a webpage is, there are 3 characteristics we look at:

  • How current and valuable the information is
  • Aesthetics, how attractive it is
  • Technical, how quickly does it load, do all of the hyperlinks work, etc.

1. Information

You want people to come back to your website.  So, they must feel like the information is valuable to them.  Does it sound original?

Is it current?  You need valuable information to keep each new post current.  Ideally your blog will have one main theme.  Every post and page in that blog will be related to that central theme.

Usually you should keep each post over 300 words.

2. Aesthetics

  • Layout — How well is your web page laid out?
  • Ease of reading — Is it easy to read?
  • Pictures — Do the pictures assist with the reading experience?

Skim like an F

Brown letter FAlways keep in mind that people usually will not read your page.  They will skim it.

Expect them to just skim over it in the shape of a capital letter F. They will read the first few lines completely.  Then they will read the beginning of a few lines.  Then they will skim right down the page.

Bullet points

So, try to have lots of bullet points to help with the skimming right down.

Pictureswebpage Brain XRay in blue skull

Line Length

People prefer to read shorter lines. So,

  • Grab their attention in the first few lines
  • Make the first few lines short
  • Then they read the first few lines
  • After that you have them wanting to read
  • You can then continue article with longer lines
  • Start with shorter lines by having a picture at the top of the page like this.

3. Technical

Links

  • Test all of your links to make sure they work.  (It helps with SEO to have links to external sources.)
  • Have social media icons so that visitors can share your excellent content with their friends and colleagues.

Help pages load quickly

40% of people will abandon a site if it takes greater than 3 seconds to load.

  • Photo size — Don’t have photos larger then they have to be.  For example, I had an image with a “wow” factor that was 741 pixels wide.  It was 1.3MB in size.  When I selected a corner and made it smaller, it still was 1.3 MB in size.  However, when I opened it up in GIMP and used Image > Scale Image to reduce it to 400 pixels wide, it was 407 kB in size.
  • Block 3rd party cookiesReduces ad garbage
  • Search for load time reducing ideas.  Try reading How to Make Your Site Insanely Fast.

Reducing ad garbage

To reduce ad garbage, make a web search for how to block 3rd party cookies.  Here’s how to block 3rd party cookies with 2 different web browsers:

  • INTERNET EXPLORER: Tools> Internet Options> Privacy> Advanced:
here check ‘Override automatic….’; ‘Allow session cookies’; ‘Allow 1st party cookies’ & ‘Block 3rd Party Cookies’.
  • firefox-add-onsFIREFOX: Tools> Options> Privacy: Check ‘Accept Cookies from sites’
& Un-Check ‘Accept 3rd Party cookies’                          Firefox keeps changing their software.  With my version, I had to go to Tools > Add-ons and select the ad blocker (ABP) add-on.

“Wow” factor note

I promote each blog post using at least 3 different social media (Twitter, Facebook & Google Plus).  Here’s an example of how I promoted a post using 7 different social media.

Pictures are much more effective than words for getting points across.  So, I’ve started using an amazing picture at the top of each blog post.  Each social media post linking to that post will have the same picture.
