Twitter Followers, 14 Tips for Getting More

What’s important?

In order of importance, this is what you need for your Twitter account:

1. Quality posts
2. Large quantity of Twitter followers

You most likely want to subtly sell your Twitter followers something.  However, what you sell is not the reason people come to your posts.  They want some worthwhile information.

So, selling must be a secondary or tertiary activity.  You want to have high quality content so that people will read it and keep coming back for more.

Twitter FollowersI once made a blog post about how to find enough data to write quality blog posts every time.  If you cannot figure out how to make a particular post interesting, don’t write it.  You want a reputation of a person who ALWAYS writes interesting posts in his/her blog.  Then link from Twitter to that post.

Getting more Twitter followers

Here are 14 tips on how to get more Twitter followers:

1. Link to nothing but QUALITY posts (yours and other people’s).
2. Have a graphic in every tweet.  Make sure it has the right aspect ratio.
3. Tweet often enough to get followers interested.
4. Have an interesting bio with a good head shot.  Expect that many people will read your bio before deciding to follow you.  So, make your bio compelling.  Begin by giving the theme of your tweets so that people will know whether or not they want to follow you.
5. Create a Twitter list and try to follow the people on your list.
6. Use (but don’t overuse) #hashtags to find people of similar interests.
7. Follow anyone who follows you if their theme is similar to yours.
8. On your blog posts, use a Twitter logo with a link to your Twitter account.
9. news about social media marketingUsing your Twitter search box, search for the theme of your Twitter account.  Click on the “news about” link and then hover over each avatar.  If the profile matches the theme of your Twitter account, follow them.  After you are finished checking out each profile, click “refresh” to get a new list of avatars.
10. Add “Pls retweet” to the end of your tweets.
11. Announce free stuff, special discounts, special events and upcoming sales in your Twitter account.
12. Look at a few posts from each person who follows you.  If they are related to the theme of your Twitter account, follow them.
13. Use humor, trends & statistics to get people to retweet you.
14. Place follow links on your blog.

Photo Resizer for Twitter Image

Twitter cropping image

photo resizer Infinity symbol loopI once tweeted an explanation of how to make a YouTube video loop continuously on a web page.  The picture from my blog page was the stylized infinity symbol you see on the right.  I did not realize that I needed a photo resizer.

photo resizer Infinity continuous loopI tried inserting that same picture on my tweet.  The top and bottom were cut off as you see in this image.

Photo resizer to fix my problem

I realized that the images in Twitter were twice as wide as they are high.  This blog post explains how you can use a free copy of the GIMP program to change the aspect ratio of your picture.

The predominant color in the photo is pink.  So, you can use GIMP as a photo resizer.  You could create a pink rectangle with three important Sled dog whistlercharacteristics:

1. It will be the same height as the photo photo you want to insert.
2. The photo will be inserted in the centre of the pink rectangle.
3. It will be twice as wide as it is high.

Statistics

According to the Social Times, adding a Twitter image to your tweet will  generate 18% more clicks, 89% more favorites and 150% more retweets than those without.

Twitter image times 10

twitter imageI’ve started using a creative way to get up to 10 pictures on a single Twitter post.  I will occasionally have my tweet link to a SlideShare page. (See the SlideShare post at the bottom of this page.)

In the tweet shown here, I have an image that really makes people want to know what is going on.  Then the web link will sent people to my SlideShare presentation that has 10 images.

Imagine that you want to introduce four new products to the marketplace.  You can make an enticing SlideShare presentation of 10 or 15 slides.  After they see it, people will know the benefits of all four products and will know where to buy them.

You can even add clickable links taking the visitor to a webstore.

 Twitter Image dimensions

You do not want to see your logo or an image only partially show up.  If that happens to you, delete your tweet and add it again with the correct dimensions.

Here are the best Twitter dimensions:

  • Header image: 1500 pixels by 500 pixels
  • Profile image: 400 pixels by 400 pixels
  • Tweeted images 876 pixels by 438 pixels

A simpler way to get the perfectly sized image in a tweet is explained in the Photo Resizer post.  That way you do not have to worry about the Twitter image size in pixels.

how to tweet

8 reasons why the tweet above is a good tweet

The tweet above is an excellent tweet.  Here are eight reasons why it will help to get more Twitter followers:

  1. Right away visitors realize they can get interesting and useful information.  In this example it is about how to get quality followers on Twitter.
  2. It has a high quality image relating to the subject of the tweet.
  3. There are hashtags but no more than two.
  4. There is a quality bio on the Twitter account.
  5. Every blog post has a Twitter link to the Twitter account.
  6. There is a link to my blog in the tweet.
  7. Spelling out the word “retweet”, it tells people to retweet.
  8. It has my photo and name showing that I am a real person and not a company, etc.

Zebra teeth4 more ways to get quality followers on Twitter

  1. Every one of my blog posts has an RSS feed.  Make sure RSS feeds are hooked up.
  2. Click on your hashtags and find tweets relative to your sub-niche.  Comment on them without being spammy.
  3. If someone else’s tweet in my niche is high enough quality, retweet it.
  4. Have high-quality, entertaining photos.  I often go to Adobe Stock and buy quality photos.  It improves that changes that someone will retweet it.

Avoid this!

Careful using humor on Twitter.  As Justine Sacco found out, people can interpret your joke in a completely different way than you intended.  You could end up getting fired.

Twitter profile

You want people to follow you on Twitter.  So, when people go into your Twitter feed, they must almost immediately get a sense of what your posts are about.

In my case, I want to have followers who are interested in social media marketing.  So, I tell them about my posts in my profile.  It says, “My tweets are about social media marketing. I post nothing but high quality information about social media.”

Twitter header & profile pictureThe header has logos of the 7 social media with which I work.  I have a decent profile picture to help brand myself.

Creating the header

For reasons I do not understand, Twitter made it difficult to create the ideal header. So, if these instructions sound weird, bear with me.  If you do what I did, you will follow the steps below to create your header.

Yellow Twitter header template

    1. Upload the above template and save with a descriptive name.
    2. Open it in GIMP and expand it to be 1500 pixels wide.  (It should be around 421 pixels high.)
    3. Go to the Texture King website and get yourself a free textured background.

Scale and break link4. Change the dimensions to 1500 x 421 pixels.  (You’ll have to click on the graphic of the links to do that.)
5. Add an invisible layer to the template and paste the texture into it.
Change opacity of top layer6. Temporarily change the opacity of the textured layer so that you can see the template.
7. Add graphics on top of the yellow part of the template.  You will create a picture describing the purpose of your Twitter account.  (Mine is social media marketing.  So, I added the logos of the main social media I use.  Each logo was on a different layer.)
8. Delete the bottom (template) layer.
9. Starting at the top, merge each layer down.
10. Save with a descriptive name and add it to your Twitter header space.

Scheduling tweets

The short article below is from a Twitter email.

To maintain a lively Twitter presence, you need to Tweet consistently. But you probably don’t want to spend every day glued to your Timeline.

Twitter Emojis to Express Emotions and Ideas

 History of the Twitter emojis

twitter emojisOriginally an emoticon (short for emotion icon) was a pictorial representation of a facial expression.  Its purpose was to express the writer’s feelings or intended tone.  This would help prevent a misinterpretation of the writer’s  communication.  People often call them “Twitter emojis”.

That’s not quit accurate.  “Emoji” comes from two Japanese words meaning “picture” and “character”.  They first started appearing in Japanese cell phones in the late 1990s.

Emoticons were created to denote the writer’s emotional state.  Emojis can may be expressing something much broader. For example, someone in Japan could use the images of a clock, bus, and school building.  It would mean “it’s time to go to school”.

3 monkey emojis

There has been much discussion over the monkey Twitter emojis.  It’s got sort of silly.  Read the article in the Tech Times.

Many people do not know the difference between Twitter emoticons and Twitter emojis. They use the terms interchangably.  I suspect that eventually they will become synonyms.

In the beginning, emoticons were all made using a keyboard’s special characters.  For instance 🙂 would mean happy and 🙁 would mean sad.

Later on, text emoticons were often replaced with small corresponding images.  The colored symbols on the keyboard above would mean happy, indecisive and sad.  The facial expression definition expanded to included all sorts of things that people may be posting about.

How to use emoticons

Use Twitter emojis to add much more emotion and information to a 280 character tweet.  And each emoji takes exactly one character.

One must use common sense when using emoticons.  Look at this example, Overusing them can render them virtually useless.

If you use too many, that takes away the intended effect.

How to find and insert Twitter emoticons

The YouTube video below tells you to go to the Secret Emoticons website. Click on the symbol in the Code column.  When the space turns green, it has been copied into your clipboard.  After that use Cmd V to paste it into your tweet.

You do not have to waste more than ONE of your precious 280 characters to tell people how weary you are.

Tips for using Twitter emojis

The Successful Lifestyle Secrets website gives you some tips for using Twitter Emoticons.  Their website says: Using Twitter emoticons can spice up the appeal of your tweets. Hashtags and Social Media Marketing

How do hashtags work?

hashtags

What are hashtags?  A hashtags is a word or phrase preceded by a number sign (#) and used to identify a message on a specific topic. For an example, the tweet about firemen rescuing 33 dogs from fires in one day uses this hashtag: #dogrescue.

hashtagsIf people are looking for news stories similar to the dog rescue story, they can search Twitter for #dogrescue.  They can type the hashtag into the Twitter search box.  After clicking the magnifying glass, they will see a number of tweets with the #dogrescue hashtag.

Marketing with the hashtag

A hashtag is an amazing tool that helps you

♦ Give a message within a message,
♦ Take advantage of trending topics and
♦ Engage with various sub-groups of people.

You can create your own hashtag.  However, it is usually better marketing to use ones that are trending.

Trending

I checked trending hashtags out on these websites:

♦ Trendsmap.com,
♦ Hashtags.org and
♦ hashtagify.me.

I have a blog post about dogs rescued from fires (laserphoto.ca/dog-rescue). Google Trends suggested to me that “dog rescue” would be the best keyword for the article.  Hashtagify.me suggested to me that #petrescue and #animalrescue may be as good as #dogrescue.  However, after I made the tweet, the hashtag that fit best into the context was #dogrescue.

Hashtagify.me to find the best hashtag

I like the way Hashtagify.me displays the 10 related hashtags in an image format.  By clicking on one of them, you can find hashtags related to that new hashtag. (See a Hashtagify Me glossary.)

Hashtagify Top Influencers tabBy clicking on the top influencers tab , you can find out who uses the particular hashtag the most. By scrolling down a bit you can find a graph of the top 6 influencers.  You can hover over each circle and find out how many followers each one has.  These data can help you decide which one of these influencers (if any) you would like to form a relationship with.

To learn more about this subject, go to the help page and scroll down to the Top Influencers heading.

What hashtag in what region?

Trendsmap.com can help you know which trends are popular in which city or which country.  Armed with this knowledge, you can custom tweet using the most popular hashtags in a particular area.

Related hashtags and prolific users

The Hashtags.org website helps you find related hashtags.  It also helps you find prolific users of that hashtag. Those are people who use a particular hashtag repeatedly in their various posts.  If a particular hashtag fits into the theme of your account, you may want to establish a relationship with some of those prolific users.  They are tweeting about same topic as you are.  You may be able to exchange links, etc.

How Twitter Replies Work

Matt Singley’s blog explains how Twitter replies work.  The post begins:

If your tweet starts with a username (e.g. @mattsingley) then it will only be seen by that person and anybody who follows both you and them. If your tweets starts with any character or symbol other than the @ symbol, it will be potentially seen by everybody that follows you, whether or not they also follow the person mentioned.

5 Reasons Why Your CEO Should be Tweeting

The Social Times blog gives 5 reasons.  The first one explains how Twitter can help a CEO give a message to the press.  It says:

Speaking one-on-one to the press can be a great way to network and make product or partnership announcements. And if your CEO is on Twitter, this process becomes a lot easier.

Many journalists use their own Twitter accounts to source stories and conduct research. They are always on the lookout for a good scoop. By connecting to the journalists covering your industry, your CEO will be able to form positive relationships with them. He or she can compliment them on a recent article, point them to industry news, and even offer to conduct an interview as an expert.

Mentions

Mentions have the @ sign in front of the username within the tweet.  It cannot be at the beginning. It shows up only in your feed, in the feed of the person being mentioned and in the feeds of people following both you and the mentioned person.

If there is a period in front of the @ sign in either a mention or a reply, anyone within the tweeter’s feed can see the post.

If you will upgrade from your lite (free) version of CurationSoft, you can become an affiliate and sell the software from your website. You will get a commission every time someone upgrades form the lite version to the paid version
