Social Media Marketing

What is social media marketing?

Wikipedia says that it is the process of gaining website traffic or attention through social media sites.  However, it is more than that.  There is the marketing component.  It involves using the social media to help a person or company increase brand exposure and broaden customer reach.

Developing a relationship

You must remember the social part of social media marketing.  It involves developing relationships.  A good way to start developing relationships with people in your niche is to pick one and then read one of their blog posts.  Go to the comments section and let them know what you think about it.

Use a free copy of CurationSoft to find the highest quality blog posts.  Then, start commenting on them.

Failures

Very large businesses have a reputation of failing at social media marketing because they leave the social out of the media marketing.     To be successful, they must not relate to people as if they are trying to promote something to them.

2 people having coffeeThey should relate as if they are sitting across the table from them in a social setting.  They should use the same lingo as them and should be genuinely interested in them.

Timing

A large company’s social media manager may have trouble working just during office hours.  To work optimally, you have to be available to answer questions when people are asking them.  You have to respond to industry news when it happens.  This could be before breakfast or after supper.

British Airways planeIf a visitor cannot get an answer right away, they could very well go to a competitive company.

E.g., a disgruntled son tweeted excessively about British Airways losing his  father’s luggage.  A British Airways employee finally tweeted back: @HVSVN Sorry for the delay in responding, our twitter feed is open 0900-1700 GMT. Please DM your baggage ref and we’ll look into this.

This is a textbook example of not responding at the right time.  The tweeter is NOT interested in waiting until the morning.

I searched online for “british airways lost luggage 0900”.  I found the above tweet from the British Airways employee along with a negative news story on page one of Google.  Note that this promoted tweet received a total of 14,600 engagements and 76,000 impressions.

These negative posts can stay around for a long time.  This event happened two and a half years ago and I found the news story today.

This is a lesson for all of us.  Answer questions on your social media as quickly as possible.  Try to make sure that you are giving them something that will make them feel better.

Not enough time

social mediaIt is important to note that millions of businesses that do not have enough time will contract their social media work out.  They pay people to respond to comments, make regular updates, etc.  Read about how some people get started working part time from home doing other companies’ social media marketing.

4 best practices

The Small Business Trends website says

Problem: Visitors not noticing ads

The Lexington Herald Leader website says

▪  Eighty percent of the top 50 global brands actively post to the top five social media platforms (such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube, etc.).

▪  Of those 80 percent, most saw their followings increase. Yet the engagement rates have declined. Social media engagement for business has always been low. For example, Instagram posts from brands created interactions with their followers went from 4 percent last year to 2 percent this year….

Facebook was the only platform where interaction rates increased.

While people may follow a brand, they may not interact with the brand unless needed and it will be on the user’s terms….Increased social media participation by businesses is creating a lot of noise for the consumer.

Most social media users are savvy. And, just like with Internet advertising, users are tuning away. It seems consumers aren’t interested in being talked at, but rather being talked with in their interactions with brands.

How do you break through the noise?  Read more.

Search engine optimization is not enough

Social media marketing best practices

Commit yourself to spending 20 – 30 minutes/day 5 days a week.  This should yield you 2 – 4 opportunities/day or 10 – 20/week.

Read various blog posts and forums over well enough to get a real understanding what each one is about.  For forums look at the number of posts, the age of the posts and the number of people on the forum.  For blogs, look to see what kind of people are commenting.  For YouTube, look at the number of views.  For Facebook, look at the number of people who like a page and the number of comments.

Blog Sites

Look at lots of blogs that may be related to your market niche.  Before choosing a blog, consider these points:

  • Is this a blog my customers would be interested in?
  • Number of comments
  • Can my name be linked to my website?  (If too blatant, may be considered spam.  One way to avoid this problem is linking to a YouTube video that has your ad inside.)
  • Create you account as a real live person
  • Make sure there is a way to comment

After picking a blog, do this:

  • Participate in blog post commenting
    • Make sure you add value
    • Occasionally answer questions with link to your site
    • Use your real name & picture
    • Fill out profile
    • Link to your site only when it helps answer a question, relieves a problem or makes common sense

Facebook

social media marketingSign up for Facebook in a new account with a new Facebook persona.  Every project I have gets its own page under this account.

Suppose you are trying to sell pet memorials.  Search for Facebook pet memorials.  Find a few Facebook pages dedicated to pet memorials.  “Like” them all.  When one of them shows up on your live feed, pounce on it.  If it pertains to your website, participate in the feed.  Try to make links to revenue-producing site.

Forums

  • social media marketingFill out real profile with real name & picture
  • Totally understand posting rules.  Read guidelines
  • Don’t promote anything or even have links until some people get to know you.  Just participate
  • Give EXPERT advice  (We are all experts at something)
  • Befriend most important people before I start promoting products
  • Post content articles on your website and link to them
    • Get someone at fiverr.com to research and write an article for $5
    • Alternately, you can use a free copy of CurationSoft to write some amazing articles.
  • Some people with 6-figure businesses get their ONLY traffic from forums

Squidoo

social media marketingSquidoo is now part of Hub Pages.  Look it up & study it.

Use the same rules as blog pages.

Login with Facebook to add credibility.

Buy a lens from someone who is no longer interested. Then you will already be an authority.

Yahoo Answers

Very easy to be banned if you look like a spammer.  So, be careful.

Be very picky about what questions you answer.  Only answer those things you know a great deal about.

Cannot have links until you are in a #2 position.  Answer around 10 questions a week.  Only 2 or 3 of them should have links.  You may be able to buy a #2 position from fiverr.com

Hire someone from fiverr.com to write and article for resource section of website.  Link your answer to it.

How to make money on YouTube

  • Find YouTube video that has at least 2000 views/day
  • Email owner and ask if they would add link from their video to your website for 20 – $50
  • Ask for their PayPal account and add money right away
  • Pay first.  If not done in a few days, ask them when they will be doing it.

What is social media marketing?

Multiple socia media logos reflectedSocial media marketing is the process of gaining website traffic or attention by means of social media platforms. This web page is an example of social media marketing. It illustrates 8 different social media platforms and shows how they are can be all integrated together to promote your blog.

Integrate with Pinterest

Integrate Social Media 2To the right you see an eye-catching graphic with a message.  The graphic is called a Pinterest pin.

After I first posted it on this web page, I hovered over the upper left-hand corner and clicked on the Save button.  I saved it to one of my Pinterest boards.  Each  time I hovered over the Save button, I was able to save the pin to another board.

You integrate your pin to your blog by going into your Pinterest account.  Click on the edit icon and paste the URL of your blog post into the appropriate box.

When people click on the pin from within the Pinterest website, they will end up on this web page.

Slideshare p

The SlideShare presentation below has five different slides that help to integrate with your blog post. Starting at slide #4 you can have links to other web pages to help promote your products.

 Eight social media, count them

This page talks about 8 different interrelated social media. They refer to each other in such a way as to make your social media marketing campaign snowball.

These are the 8 social media:

1. Your blog
2. Twitter
3. Facebook
4. Google Plus
5. SlideShare
6. Pinterest
7. YouTube
8. LinkedIn

What is organic traffic?

This refers to visitors that comes to your website as a result of unpaid search results. A goal of SEO is to increase traffic to a website. This can be done by making a website more searchable or by using pay per click (PPC).

What are long-tail keywords?

Long-tail keywords are exact sequences of two or more words that people use to search for something on the Internet. They tend to be very specific to whatever you are emphasizing on your web page. In all likelihood, when customers use highly specific search phrases, they tend to be looking for exactly what is on the web page they find.

Consider this five-word keyword: “low carb high fat diet”. Whoever would come to a website with that long-tail keyword is definitely looking for information about low carb high fat diets.

Social Media Sites Using Multiple Platforms

8 different social media sites

This web page is about marketing using 8 different social media sites — SlideShare, Google Plus, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and a blog.

social media sites Twitter header & profile picture

In the examples given, each social media site is being used to promote the same product — Perfect Uninstaller.  That program is an uninstall tool designed to remove unwanted programs from Windows computers.

The idea behind having EIGHT different social media sites is to increase the probability that one of the 8 will result in a sale.  The more social media that are correctly used, the higher the probability of making more sales.

Pinterest

The beauty of Pinterest for business is that your Pinterest graphic can gain more visibility over time.  Of all the social media sites discussed here, Pinterest is probably the best at sending traffic to your website months after it was first posted.

If you hover over the picture of the Perfect Uninstaller box in the pin, you will see a little graphic that says “pin it”.  When people click on that, they can add the pin to any one of their Pinterest boards.  (The “pin” is the entire 1800 pixel long graphic.)

To get started with Pinterest, go to the first Pinterest blog post on this website.  After that you can go up to the blog tab in the horizontal menu.  Hover over it to find the other entries about Pinterest.

SlideShare

Go to this SlideShare blog post to help you get started with SlideShare.  Hover over the blog tab at the top of the page in order to find more SlideShare blog posts.

YouTube

This website is full of information on how to make better YouTube videos.  You can go to the YouTube link in the horizontal menu and find a complete YouTube video-creation tutorial.

If you hover over the blog tab and scroll down to YouTube, you can find lots of little tricks for making your videos more effective.

Watch the YouTube video promoting Perfect Uninstaller.

Facebook

You can have special Facebook pages relating to the various things you are trying to promote.  I have a page to promote social media marketing.

Of all the social media sites, Facebook is the most popular.

I chose that page as the best place to promote Perfect Uninstaller.  My post is in the image on the right. Notice that I used a Bitly address to make the post more meaningful.

You can find my post on the social media marketing page from Feb.19/16.

Twitter

The image to the right is the Twitter post you will find on my Twitter site from June 23/16.  Notice how, in order to not have duplicate content, I made sure the wording was different from my Facebook post.

To find many tricks for using about using Twitter, hover over this web page’s blog link on the horizontal menu and scroll down to the Twitter collection.

Google Plus

Google Plus posts can be much longer than your Twitter posts.  Note that they should be worded differently from the corresponding Facebook post.

Also note that my Feb.23/16 Google+ post is about Perfect Uninstaller.

 Blog

Any of my social media marketing campaigns will revolve around a blog post.  That will be done first.  Then the other social media will somehow relate to it.

This web page is a blog post giving a reasonably good description of Perfect Uninstaller.  It had a link telling how to download it.  Then it had a number of testimonials from happy Perfect Installer users.

It also had 7 different social media linking to it.

LinkedIn

For the last social media site, consider LinkedIn.  You can go to your LinkedIn home page and click on the “publish a post” button.  Get some eye-catching pictures and write a high quality post about the product you are trying to promote.

Don’t make it look too much like an ad.  If you do, you may just turn your audience off.  If you go to my LinkedIn post, you will notice that I offered a free trial offer rather than telling people I wanted to sell them something.

To learn more about LinkedIn, see my What is LinkedIn? article.  You can also hover over the blog tab above and scroll down to the list of LinkedIn blog posts.

YouTube video

Let YouTube teach you about Perfect Uninstaller in less than 2 minutes.
