♦ Summarized it in your word processor.

3. No matter what you use to find your content, use Google Trends to help you find the right long-tail keywords.

Authority in Your Sub-niche

Lay the foundation

To fully implement the power of social media, you must become an authority in your specialized area of expertise.   (It may be easier then you think.  Keep reading.) However, before you do, you must lay the foundation for your website.  It is very likely that you will make no money at all in the first month or two.

Find a topic you are passionate about and have a great deal of knowledge about.  Try to create one web page per day. (That too is easier than you may think.) After you have 20 or 30 pages, you may feel like you have a professional-looking website.

Then you can start a blog.

Everything revolves around your blog

Central to your social media marketing will be your blog.  All of your other social media will link to that.  So, create a blog related to the rest of your website.

 Your blog’s topic

When choosing the topic for your blog, there are four things you must keep in mind:

  • Are you deeply interested in it?
  • Do people spend money in this niche?
  • Are there products to promote in this niche?
  • Is there enough potential that you with stick with it? (Do you think you will be able to add a page a day 3 months from now?)

Become an authority

Remember, the more pages on your blog, the more visitors you get.  The more visitors you get, the more revenue you get.

To help people start linking to you from the social media, it will help tremendously if they consider you to be an authority on the subject.  Do you think that you will be able to study enough and learn enough about that topic so that 3 months from now people will consider you an authority?

(That task may not be as daunting as you first presume.  Right now you know much more about your topic than lots of people.  You could have a significant number of visitors going to your blog for advice.  Your visitors may come to your blog and consider you an authority long before you have the same feeling about yourself.)

Example of an authority blog

Look at this blog page.  There are a few sentences that the author got by doing a Google search for pet news.  The news story had a picture that is repeated here.  To avoid copyright problems, the source of the picture is referenced.

Below that there is a Related pages section.  In this case the main story was about someone who bought twin Tibetan Mastiff dogs for $3.2 million.

The corresponding Twitter post used this hashtag: #TibetanMastiff.  Clicking on that found the story about the end of the Tibetan Mastiff fad in China.

Identify your niche

Ask yourself to which niche you should become an authority.  Can you make money on it?

An important tool in answering this question is Google Trends.  Suppose you are very interested in pets.  Your website is about a similar topic and you ask yourself whether you should make your blog about pets.

A Google Trends search shows that worldwide people are searching for pets 110,000 times a month.  That means that too many people are searching for information about pets.  Some of the websites will be from big companies with big advertising budgets.  You do NOT want to compete with them.

You know lots about pet insurance so you think you may write a blog about that.  There are 165,000 searches per month.  Again that is too high and you will have too much competition.

How to become an instant authority

 

A good rule of thumb is to drill down to a sub-niche.  The niche may just have too much competition.

Contact Form for WordPress

Wanting to set  up a brand new contact form in my new WordPress blog, I decided to choose Contact Form to Email.

Setting it up was challenging.  The creators of Contact Form to Email say that they have 40,000+ users.  I sort of suspect that most of those forms were set up by people who do this type of thing for a living. The setup process was not intuitive at all.

I persevered and decided to create this blog post so that you would not have to persevere so hard.

Contact Form to Email logoStart by going to plugins > add new and enter the word form in the search box in the upper right-hand corner.  That will give you a large number of WordPress plugins with the word form in the title.

You will see the Contact Form to Email graphic above.  Notice that the form has only three and a half stars.  I suspect that’s because the installation process is so non-intuitive.  After I finally got it set up, the form works perfectly and I am glad that I chose this particular contact form.  I’ve worked with other forms and this one is my favorite WordPress contact forms.

Click on the blue Contact Form to Email and then click the blue Install Now button on the lower right-hand corner.  Wait half a minute while it downloads and then click the Activate Plugin link.

Contact form to Email optionsThe name of the form will show up near the bottom of the black left-hand column.  Click on it and six tabs will show up.

Click on the Update tab and you can fill in your email address in the Send email from and the Send to email(s) tabs.  Save by clicking the Update Report Settings button.

Blue form builderClick the Settings tab near the top of the page.  Fill in the blanks and then scroll down to the blue form builder.  With the Add a Field tab selected, click  on a box type such as Single Line Text.  Then select the box you created and click on Field Settings > Field Label box.  Change the label to Name or whatever you want to call it.

At this point you can drag and drop your new box up to the point where you wish it to be located.  Alternately, you can click on the tiny blue garbage can if you wish to delete it.  Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes.

Now you should create some sort of form sent page.  In my case I named my new page thanks.  The message was Your form has been sent.  Go back to the Settings page and insert something such as this after Thank you page (after sending the message) — http://My-website.com/thanks.  Don’t forget to save it.

Form codeThe form code will show up after your items list.  Copy this code into your clipboard and paste it where you wish your form to show up.  This can be either in visual view or text view.  After you update the page, a contact form such as the one below will on your page or post.  Test it.  If you are having any troubles at all, look for the word help while you are trying to create your form.

Possible error

There may be an error on the WordPress Contact Form 7. It that is your problem, here is a solution I found online. It is a Quick Fix to spinning arrow displays forever & no success/error message displayed.

You can go to the contact form plugin settings in admin and add a file upload field in your contact form. If you don’t want to display the file upload field in your form then you can simply make it hidden. Like this:-

Here, file-upload is the name of the file upload field.

What is a blog?

  • Content usually organized by date and category.  The most recent post/content displays first.
  • Before you start blogging, choose a topic about which you are passionate and fairly knowledgeable about.

Free weblog maker?

  • Downsides to using a free blog maker:
    • Companies who offer “free” blog makers have to make money somehow. They may put ads on your blog. They may sell you upgrades.
    • May have severe restrictions.  E.g.: Not being able to advertise on your own website
    • May be able to make money blogging if you avoid the free blog maker

Blog hosting with a monthly fee

    • Allow comments on page
    • Each page has 300-500 pages. After that a new page.

Earn Money Online — 0 to $6 Million

From no income to $6 million

earn money onlineThe Digital Marketer website has an article titled How We Grew a Blog from ZERO to $6 Million… .  To really understnd how to earn money from your blog, you’ll have to read the entire article.  (I’ll give you the link later.)  Below are some of the main points about how to earn money online.

One of the things I often think about is most people do not make much money.  So, you must do what most people do NOT do.  Digital Marketer broke the how-to-blog rules and did what most people do not do.

Below are 7 things Digital Marketers did to earn money online.

1. Sold stuff from the beginning

We are told that we should not blatantly try to sell things.  Digital Marketer did not try to hide anything.  They sold goods and services so that they could start to earn money.

People told them that their blog posts were too cluttered.  But, in order to make their seven-figure income, they had cluttered blog posts.

 3. Links to many experts

This is a very important quote form the Digital Marketer website: Experts do NOT equal Authority… authorities are people who aggregate and associate with multiple experts.  Their blog posts had lots of links to multiple experts.  That is one of their big secrets of earning money online.  A messy page could have a number of links to a number of different experts.

4. Don’t Talk About Yourself, Talk About Those You Admire

Here’s another really important quote from the Digital Marketer website: The trick is to talk about other people who are worth talking about. If you follow this rule, talking about exclusively worthwhile content experts… you’re almost assured of saying something worthwhile. Right?

It goes on to say the first step is to identify and associate with the most trusted, authoritative experts in your niche and then seek to aggregate and promote THEIR CONTENT in one place (i.e. your site).

5. Build an email list to earn money

The Wordstream website says: A squeeze page is a landing page designed to capture opt-in email addresses from potential subscribers. The goal of a squeeze page is to convince, cajole, or otherwise ”squeeze” a visitor into providing one of their most sought-after and coveted pieces of personal data: the email address.

6. Facebook advertising

Digital Marketing does a huge amount of Facebook advertising.  They grew their Facebook likes from zero to 300,000 in a year.

This is part of what one company uses to determine if the market is large enough:

♦  30,000 Google searches per month
♦  Active blogs
♦  Active Facebook Pages
♦  Active Forums
♦  Active Email Newsletters
♦  Active associations

If the market is large enough, they will consider having a website built around it.

    • On Dreamstime you can use search terms to find free images.  For instance, I entered “tall buildings” in the search box and saw 31
      search_tall_buildings-black-outlinefree pictures of tall buildings. If you are not on this web page and wish to go to Dreamstime, bit.ly/nocostimages will get you there.  Dreamstime has tens of millions of pictures & short videos from which to choose.
  • Go to the freeimages website (freeimages.com) and sign up for a free account and get free stock images.
  • download free photosAnother excellent source of free stock images is Picjumbo.  Every day more gorgeous free pictures show up.  They are available for free, even for commercial use, with no restrictions.    Important note: To get a free download into your Downloads folder, click on any image. Then click on the button to the left that says “FREE download”.
  • Gratisography is another site with royalty-free photos.  It does not have the excellent search feature that Picjumbo has.
  • Unsplash has free stock images — mostly landscape photos. They can be used for free commercially if you wish. There is even a search bar so that you can search for things such as “offices”.
  • Little Visuals is another source of free landscape photos.
  • After writing this post, I found another source of free images: DeathtotheStock.
  • And another one: Superfamous Studios.
  • Think about the category of high resolution images you want
  • Enter it in the search box
  • More free photos at public domain photos.
  •  Get free fitness, weight loss, and food photos

  • More free image websites

 

How to download free stock photos from FreeImages

  • Suppose you wanted a stock photo of a dog
  • Enter dogs in the freeimages.com search box
  • Many hundreds of pictures of dogs
  • 80% of the pictures free
  • 20% of them have a price
  • That’s how freeimages makes their money
  • Pictures with a price tag can be as cheap as $1.
  • More specific
  • Picture of a Dalmatian dog
    • Enter Dalmatian in the search box
    • Several dozen stock photos of Dalmatians.

 

 

 

  • After you see a thumbnail of a Dalmatian picture you want, click on it
  • Gives you a page with a larger picture and a download button.

 

 

 

 

  • Clicking on the download  button gives a large image
  • To save it in computer, right click and select Save image as.
  • This service dependent upon members sharing photos
  • So, if you become a member, upload some of your best photos
  • Let other members use them as royalty free images

Combine your free stock images

Pin it with Pinterest

After you download a number of images, the cheapest way to edit them is to use PhotoEditorX. It’s virtually the same as Photoshop which costs $120/year. PhotoEditorX costs $47 to download. The download comes with huge numbers of instructional videos. There are never any other costs.

To order it, simply scroll to the very bottom of that PhotoEditorX link and click on “click here to download now”.


High resolution and free stock images

  • One minor problem with high resolution images is the size
  • Just PART of it may occupy entire computer screen.
  • I solved that stock photography problem with Skitch
  • Look at the stock photo in Finder
  • Expand the finder as much as possible
  • Capture it with Skitch
  • Save with a descriptive name.

HTML Code

What is HTML code?

HTML code is a set of symbols that tells a browser (such as Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari) how to display text and images on the Internet.  For instance, you may want to have this sentence in an article: My cat has blue eyes.  You want “blue” to be in the colour blue and the rest of the text to be in the default colour.  So, you could type it this way: My cat has <span style=“color:blue”>blue</span> eyes. In this case the symbols are called tags, specifically span tags.

An HTML tag is a hidden keyword within a web page that determines how a browser will display the content.

How to use an HTML tag

With a few exceptions, every start tag must have an end tag.

For this example, we will simplify the example above and then expand upon it in the next section.  Instead of discussing the span tag, let’s talk about the paragraph tag.  So, the “blue eyes” sample above could be expressed as a paragraph like this: <p>My cat has <span style=“color:blue”>blue</span>
eyes
</p>.  

In our new example the letter p stands for paragraph. The end tag uses the same symbol (p) with a slash in front.

Never cross start and end tags

In the first example above, the span tags were used within paragraph tags.  It is very important that you never cross the tags.  If you begin the text with the paragraph and then the span tag in that order, you must end with the span tag and then the paragraph tag in that order.

For instance, suppose you want an H3 heading with italicized text.  The HTML code would look like this: <h3><em>My H3 heading</em></h3>. That code would produce this heading:

Tag attributes

In the example above, <span style=“color:blue”> is the start tag and </span> is the end tag.  Keep in mind that on a web page “blue” was supposed to be coloured blue.  In order to do that, we had a start tag in front of “blue” and an end tag after “blue”.  In order make the span change something, we had to give it a modifier called an “attribute”.

Give an exception to the HTML tag rule about using an end tag

There are a few tags where it is not necessary to use an end tag.  For instance, when you want to start on a new line, you simply use the line break tag <br>.

The w3schools website has a great deal of information about how to use HTML code.  Here’s a good trick for using the w3schools website: In your search engine, use the word “w3schools” followed by the keyword of what you are looking for.

For instance, suppose you want to know how to make something bold.  You would enter this into your search engine: w3schools bold.  That will give you a page showing you how to make text bold.

Now here’s a really special feature: If you scroll down, you will find a green button saying “try it yourself”. Click on that button and you will get a new window in which you can play around with the bold tag.  You can copy and paste the start and end tags somewhere else within the content.  Click “see result” and you will see how the tag changes the text.

Amazing content writing for your new blog post

How often have you wanted to make a riveting new blog post but have found yourself with writers’ block?  You just cannot think of a topic in your niche.  I finally found a system that helps me find enough information every day or two to create high quality posts every time.  The SEO people call this “high quality content writing”.

My niche is social media.  So, every post must have something to do with social media.

I start with a broad subtopic such as Twitter.   Then I use the word Twitter in Google AdWords to find a good related long-tail keyword.

I rank the number of monthly searches by clicking the Avg. monthly search tab. Following in the footsteps of a lady who always made over $50,000 online every month, I found a long-tail keyword that had under 100,000 monthly searches.  (The lady usually preferred a keyword that has between 10,000 and 100,000 monthly searches.)  I chose Twitter Analytics because the suggested bid was $11.48.

I am using Google AdSense to advertise online.  Now, if Google AdSense is looking for a place to insert a pay per click (PPC) ad about Twitter Analytics, I am hoping they will choose my web page.  After all, the subject matter is Twitter Analytics and the term Twitter Analytics will be used many times in the post.  Every time someone would click on the ad, my share of the income would be approximately 68% of $11.48.

content writingNow this is where it gets very easy to find high-quality content relating to my niche.  All I have to do is open up CurationSoft and search for Twitter Analytics.   I can search Google Blog, Google Plus, Wikimedia Pages, YouTube … a total of 18 different authoritative sources.

These posts are from the most authoritative posts in my niche. My job is to write an excellent article that impresses my audience of people who were looking for information about Twitter Analytics.  I will get the information from at least 3 of the articles I found.

When writing the article, I keep these points in mind

  • Showcase my expertise and feel free to clearly lay out my opinion in MY post.
  • Weave a story around the curated articles that I am pulling out.
  • I mix and match for types of content.  I may pick out a book related to the topic, place an appropriate video on my post…. .
  • I must WOW my reader with my expertise.  At the same time, I am pulling out very valuable articles from the web (even books and/or videos) so that my reader does not have to go around hunting in the world wide spider web!
  • As I am writing, I write words which praise my sources and provide links to them.

The purpose of LaserPhoto.ca is to sell granite pet memorials.   The pet memorials are promoted with social media and Facebook advertising.  The picture you see on the right is used in their ads.

So, it just makes sense to have a blog about dogs.  In one post the author searched online for news about dogs.  He ended up finding a story about a dog of war that sniffs out bombs in a war zone.
